Notes on LANDSCAPES | view bio | ||
The celestial light in Brian Kosoff’s landscapes of the Sierras, Death Valley and other breathtaking locales has won him comparisons to the master landscape photographer, Ansel Adams. Yet Kosoff’s darkroom mastery imbues his images with a painterly quality that is very much his own. Kosoff admits that he struggled, at first, trying to recapture the places that had been immortalized by Adams: “When you go to many of these places, and try to capture what you’re seeing, you’re confronted with the Ansel Adams legacy every step of the way . . . it is impossible to compete with his memorable images.” Instead, Kosoff concentrates on the theme of time, rendering its movement in a way that other artistic mediums cannot. “I’m not content only to capture what I see before me,” he says. “I record not what’s there but what could be there.” |
