|Notes on STILL LIFES||view bio|
The objects around us bear witness to our lives, but they also have lives of their own. “I try not to insert a narrative into the composition,” Rita Maas says, “because each object has a story.” A commercial photographer by trade, Maas’s natural light still lifes—created over the past eight years with a 4x5 view camera —are delicately constructed canvases where dried clematis vines, vanishing chalk lines, glass bottles, and weathered books assemble in an elegant interplay of line, color, and form. Each piece creates a space for meditation, another world where the eye is free to traverse the plane, igniting memories that lay dormant within our collective unconscious.
